Class Descriptions

PAINTING CLASSES-

In all painting classes you will become familiar with the supplies, safety, methods of use and techniques.  You will learn about composition, values, color, color temperature and much more! You will learn by mixing color on your palettes, doing thumbnail sketches in your sketchbooks, copying famous artworks and creating your own original works using the methods you learn.

DRAWING CLASSES-

In drawing class, we begin with fundamentals such as pencil control, line pressure, mark making and shapes.  We go from 2D shapes to 3D shapes, volume as well as perspective and proportion.  We will combine these technical skills to create loose sketches as well as precisely rendered images.

Paint Colors and Quality brands

All Paint classes need these paint colors in whatever medium the class is in. You are welcome to bring additional colors if you have them.

alizarin crimson, viridian green, dioxazine purple, yellow ochre, cadmium yellow medium, cadmium orange, cadmium red medium, quinacridone rose, burnt sienna, raw umber, french ultramarine blue, sap green and titanium white

I always recommend buying the highest quality paints you can afford. Dealing with low quality paints leads to frustration and workability and durability issues.

Brands of paint that are the best quality for their price:

For Oil Paints I recommend Winton, which is a student level quality of Winsor Newton that is excellent for the price. Utrecht and Winsor-Newton pro and Golden regular are similar, and Holbein, Gamblin and Golden Pro are a level up and more expensive. If you are trying oils for the first time, feel free to buy the 12ml tubes to save on cost, but generally I recommend larger sized tubes for serious oil painting as we use a good deal of paint.

For acrylic paints, I recommend Liquitex Heavy Body, Utrecht's and Winsor Newton professional are in the same range. Golden Heavy Body is more expensive. Please stay away from high flow acrylics or craft acrylics for this class. Please choose the 5oz tubes at minimum.

For watercolor paints, Winsor Newton Cotman paints are great for the price, but Winsor Newton Professional is still a good bang for the buck as is Daniel Smith. Schmincke is more expensive. Please choose 5ml or smaller tubes, a little watercolor goes a long way.
